Regarding Puerto Rico

No doubt shrugging and walking away laughing will seem rude when you are asking for help, and no doubt Puerto Ricans, as anyone else, may be rude at times. Still, when it comes to giving directions, I must admit that such reaction was very likely NOT due to "rudeness". I was born and raised there, and can vouch that such is a typical reaction of not understanding or not knowing how to explain.

In fact, if they understand your language (and your question!) and they actually KNOW where you are headed to, they will be very glad to help. However, their directions will probably leave you more confused than you were before.

Reasons? Several:
(1) Small island, most locals not used to maps, so they can't point and show you.
(2) Road signs, although better now, not always dependable. As in some States, streets may have several names which are not all on the signs.
(3) Distances, too short to let the road signs be significant, and thus not paid attention to by locals. By the time your brain registers the sign, you're already past the turn.
(4) Of course, possible language barrier. Even if they understood you, they may not know enough English to give you the complex reply giving directions require.
(5) Way in which directions are given (e.g. "You take this road and go straight, go straigh, keep going on this winding road until you see a McDonalds. Well, not there. Keep going and going. Pass two, no, three, no, I'm not sure how many lights. But you'll see a Supermarket... not there either...") You get the idea.

Giving directions is a national deficiency. Cut them some slack.

My worst trip in a taxi was in PortauPrince, Haiti. In February of 1996, I was working with a fair trade group and driving from our hotel to a small workshop about 3 miles away. Along the way we encountered frenzied horn honking, storm sewers without grates as well as manholes with no covers. The car was a mid60's Chevy that hadn't see an exhaust system in at least 20 years. As the driver swung around each deep, dark hole and we held our breath and sweat in the sealed confines (we were told not to leave windows down or the doors unlocked because of thieves) of the car, we prayed! After rolling along at a steady pace of about a mile per hour for 1 hour, we encountered our first pile of burning tires. The UN peace keepers appeared about 15 minutes later. Of course they did nothing to stop the fire, but they did get traffic moving again. We stopped twice more on this trip to watch the scenes of tires and debris being hauled into the street.
The following day, my door was ripped open while driving near the airport and thieves tried to steal my camera. Luckily, I was able to pull the door closed and lock it before anything happened.

Just got back from Fiji - let's go deeper. My favorite island was actually Qamea, on a small Eco Resort in Maqai (man-guy).
Dear 911 resource waster...

What is wrong with you? Why would you call 911 to get a tow? No wonder the operator (who is probably busy answering calls that actually ARE emergencies) told you to call a tow truck. That same phone you called 911 on could have just as easily called 411. That would have been appropriate. I've never been to Indiana, but I'm pretty sure ANY 911 operator you call for such a non-emergent request would tell you the same. Being stranded on the side of the road isn't an emergency.

Dear Seattle Slammer...
What did you say to that candy store clerk? I've lived in Seattle & Portland (the two biggest metro areas in the Pacific Northwest). I have to say both places are probably one of the most friendly places I've ever lived (about a dozen different cities and that includes Los Angeles & Denver).

I have to hand my vote for the most friendly people to Peru. I have had the opportunity to work all over the world. I have been blessed with the opportunity to spend a few months in Peru and overall the people are just fantastic. Colombia is also a very nice country to visit. Especially the City of medellin. It is simple beautiful.

What an amazing video. I hiked the Annapurna Circuit years ago, and this just brought it all right back to me. I only did 5 days, but would love to go back and try a longer trek. Michael's points of view on appreciating the locals, slowing your pace, and being grateul for what you have, were really refreshing. Thanks for sharing!

dear elly, maybe you should go and live in the south for a while yourself, and if you have children better yet to get there fast. learning manners and properly addressing others not only shows respect for others, but most important for yourself. now, as for the other cities and countries mentioned, i agree france who are so embarassed that we bermuda hot dog chewing americans have sacrificed many of their family members for the freedom for them to have the oppurtunity to voice their opinions. they still are pissed that we had to save their asses twice and are embarassed to look us in the eye, especially for their world shameful acts politically.talk about rude have you ever noticed when in france how they treat their new immigrant citizens. i was in rio and getting mugged by about ten young men, around me were about a million tourists mostly american and not one person helped me. good manners are not taught by a french vogue magazine but by families, generation to generation. respect, tolerance, kindness, just a smile would knock down many cultural barriers. i always found that if yor are respectful and kind to others 99% of the time they will reciprocate. welcome mats are there for a reason.

About 3 years ago, I went to New Orleans for the Vampire Ball. My friend and I stayed at the Empress Hotel in the Treme section near the French Quarter. A young couple had stayed in the hotel earlier in the summer and got an apartment on North Rampart Street. It seems that they had gotten into a fight and the guy killed his girlfriend. One night, as my friend slept, I felt the corner of the bed depress. As I've communicated with those who've passed over to the other side for most of my life, I knew that this poor murdered girl was in the room with us. I told her that her ordeal was over and it was okay for her to cross over to the other side. She went into the light and was gone. The following morning, the hotel staff mentioned to me about the couple and the murder (the guy commited suicide shortly afterwards). They were very surprised by what I told them that had happened in the room the previous night.

For friendliness, I'd put Turkey at the top of my list - even when the Turks are selling you something, they treat you like you are the most important person in the world. Gracious, friendly and always ready to settle for a chat and some apple tea rather than a sale.

The people in Paris were lovely and helpful to me even when I tried my fractured French - but one anecdote may explain the reaction some Americans receive. We were at the top of the Eiffel Tower, awed by the view, when an obvious (and obese) American in bermuda shorts and a garish Hawaiian shirt - was gulping down a hot dog and loudly exclaiming that it was "the best meal he'd had in Paris!"

Truly an 'ugly American!' Most people react to and remember stereotypes, and disrespect for the culture of others - when you are a visitor in their country - is the best way to get treated badly.

Ethno-centerism, the belief in the rightness of your own culture, is the one thing you should leave at home when you travel.

As soon as my friends and I entered Arizona and stoped at a rest stop/gas station and the locals there found out that we were from California they were more than willing to give directions and even gave us an estimation of how many miles and hours we had to go. When we got to Maricpa and were looking for houses for rent some of the residents were kind enough to open the door and tell us there place had already been leased but gave information on what houses were available. To be kinder than that they just had to invite us in for ice tea. Which I don't blame them for not doing so as we are strangers to them.
As for Pennyslvania and residents there not opening there doors to you, I would say smart of them. Here in L.A., California many of us wont open the door to strangers either. We don't know you or what your intentions are, they may be decent intentions but how do we know that? The best defence for a person is not to be naive and overly trusting.
As for not getting help in Los Angeles because your pregnant: it's a pregnancy not a disease. Not that many people use words like Mam & Sir anymore so if you still find this in the South maybe you should stay there.

It seems 2 me that anywhere I have been has had all sorts of people. I am a talker, if standing in line, I talk, sometimes people seem shocked, some are like me and talk, some are just 2 good (in my opion). In Kansas stay clear of the small in breader towns, if a person has not had great grand parents from there, you are an outsider and if anything goes wrong, the best canidid is the outsider. As for being stranded in a strange place the best thing to do is ask your father for safe help to come. Maybe the way a person acts toward others is the way they will be treated. Dress is something else. If a person dresses 2 upsy, they might not get any thing but snobs, if a person dresses 2 ucky no one will trust them. The main thing I have found is try to act like I belong or just glad to be there, it is all in the attitude.

When we travelled to Paris, we found everyone to be most kind and helpful. One woman gave my wife her seat on the bus; another woman translated for us with a ticket seller who spoke no English.

New Orleans? Are you kidding me? I live in Chicago and go down to New Orleans every year. Each trip down there I'm struck at how friendly everyone is. "Southern Hospitality" is not just a catch phrase. I wish more people up here in Chicago acted like the people I've encountered down there.

I have one to add to the least fav.
Virginia.. When my, now, exhusband and I went to visit my sister about 5 yrs ago and got lost..We asked a few people for directions.. One literally flipped us the bird, and the rest were just plain rude...Ignored us and kept driving...
As for Italy.. I found the people to be warm, and personable, pleasant, etc.
while I've never been to France, I've heard that they're very cool and especially to Americans.....

I agree with bajoba. Did you publish anyone who doesn't apparently live in a backwater? Way to promote xenophobia and borderline racism. And the South ("I am so glad to get back to Texas," "much friendlier South," "all the Yankees...").

How many respondents were there - 12? I'd like to see the statistics that backup your locale slams. The French government did a crash program over the past couple years to emphasize courtesy towards Americans. My folks & brother did Paris this Summer & said the people could not have been nicer. Pennsy is a pretty big state, but I've always found the people nice - same as Indiana.

Great article. As a woman who also frequently travels alone, I have another tip. If you do get lost or can't find what you're looking for, DON'T stand around looking confused and waiting for someone to ask if you need help! It puts you at risk of being targeted by someone preying on confused tourists. Instead, walk confidently up to someone who is clearly a local and ask them for directions or help. After all, the odds of someone YOU choose to ask for help being a psycho are a lot lower than waiting around to be targeted by one!

Our absolute favorite Fall Color Trip from the Chicago area is Devils Lake (WI) State Park near Baraboo, WI. There one can hike up trails on wooded ancient hills formed of quartzite rock, which overlook the sparkling blue lake and hundreds of acres of beautiful, multicolored trees. Breathtaking.

One more important spelling correction on the Kishauwau on the Vermilion; the town's name is TONICA, IL, not Tonia. The whole area around Ottawa, Marsailles, LaSalle & Oglesby, especially Starved Rock State Park are great Fall Color Visits.

Amsterdam is not representative of the Netherlands. It is a tourist trap. One day in Amsterdam is more than sufficient. It is overpriced and crowded with the rejects and drug addicts of Europe. You will have a much better time in the small picturesque towns of the Netherlands like Wijk An Zee, Schiedam or Vlaardingen. There you will find lovely people, quaint little shops, old windmills, traditional Dutch restaurants and nice, clean, affordable hotels or guest houses to stay in. You will find the Dutch people to be warm, welcoming and helpful in these small towns.

Thank you to whoever dropped a note about Kishauwau on the Vermilion but I just wanted to correct our spelling. I think some people are having trouble finding us. And they are right, this is my little piece of heaven and I feel honored to help my mother-in-law with this place.

Thanks Again,

While traveling in Poland, we hired a private car to take us to Auschwitz. The driver spoke English very well, and he told us some amazing stories during our ride. When we got back to the hotel, my husband tipped him the equivalent of about $35. The driver almost FAINTED! Despite the fall of Communism, the Polish live on very low wages. Our tip had been equal to two full days work for him. It certainly made me realize how blessed that I am to be in the USA.

Their stupid SOB billboards are visible all the way to Florida! :-)

The grand canyon a big hole? wow, you sure know how to miss out on the big picture of life! those are some of the most gorgeous places on earth and you all walked away with such a negative attitude and missed out on nature's true beauty?
We visited Amsterdam in 2007 for 5 days and 4 nights. During this time we visited the Anne Frank Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, Rijks Museum, Edam, and the windmills. It was a wonderful experience. However, the city of Amsterdam was extremely touristy. We visited the flea market that was so highly recommended, and the amount of pornography for sale was disturbing. The Red Light District was interesting for about 15 minutes. The "coffee" shops are everywhere. After you have seen one, you have seen them all. I don't really know what I expected, but it was a real let down.
Plus, the cabdrivers are NOTORIOUS for overcharging tourists. We had one cabbie drive us all over town because he thought we had just arrived. My husband refused to pay other than the basic fare, which was WAY overpriced, and told him to call the police. Of course, he took our money and left.
Amsterdam is more for people with certain interests. Before you spend the money to visit Amsterdam, make sure that you are going for something specific. Good Luck with the Cabbies!

We visited Poland in 2007, and again this year. The price of using a public bathroom was less than 50 cents. This ensured that the bathroom was clean, and well supplied. I would GLADLY pay that price in the USA for a truly sanitary bathroom!

First of all, let's make sure we're clear on why we should be considering traveling light at all, because it does take some effort in advance, and our time is valuable. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that this summer is projected to be the worst ever for congestion and delays. No checked luggage = one less line at the departure airport.
Many airlines are now charging $50 and up to check more than one bag. It's just a matter of time before they start charging for all checked baggage, the same way they charge for drinks. No checked luggage = more money to spend at the destination. It's no great secret that lost luggage claims are up, too. No checked luggage = no lost luggage.
After arriving into the DC airport, the escalator heading to ground transportation was stopped. Silly me, with my suitcase and my computer bag ,decided I could handle walking down the stairs, after all I workout! Somehow I missed the last step. So I'm falling but my hands are full with luggage which means I could not grab the hand rail or brace myself against the fall. As my knee hit that hard step I knew I JUST HAD TO GET UP; no way was I going to draw more attention to myself, but I hurt. So, with my nose in the air I bounced up and kept on walking, refusing to look anyone in the eye as if I could put doubt in their minds that what they thought was a tumble really didn't happen.

Central Station in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is is a real gem. It is not a terminus station, so the shed covering the tracks and platforms is entered from the side. It is the last major station before Edinburgh on the Northeast Mainline running from London to Scotland. Because of the size of Newcastle, it is also not as large as Grand Central or Penn but it is fine nonetheless. Another fabulous station is 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, PA; perhaps the finest along the whole of the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, DC. The same relationship between rail station and central post office that once existed in NYC is still evident here.
