Santo Stefano: Seven Churches in One
Kelley Ferro, 10/09/09
Santo Stefano, or locally known as “Sette Chiese,” is a living representation of the evolution of religion and spirituality in Bologna. What started as a temple to the goddess Isis, later additions in the 5th century converted it from a Pagan temple to a Catholic church. The renovations continued on until the 13th century, resulting in seven separate basilicas, each with different styles. The best part--the church is off the beaten path and filmmaker Stephen Black says that there are more monks there than tourists. He explores each of the haunting chapels and Pontius Pilate’s courtyard, so we can take a peak at Santo Stefano with him.
