When the Happiest Place on Earth Isn’t

I waited until my youngest was eight before taking a family vacation to Disney World. After having to beg the operator of a carnival ride to stop because she was screaming and crying a few years earlier, I wasn't about to take any chances with Disney. For many kids, the thought of going to Disney World is enough to send them into an excited tizzy. But what happens once you get there and things go afoul?
Happiest Place on EarthOur Disney World trip started falling apart from the minute we walked through the gate to the Magic Kingdom. We made our way toward Splash Mountain—one of the park’s favorite rides—shortly after the amusement park opened and hoped to avoid a long line.
