Luggage Gone AWOL

lost-luggage-sm There's nothing worse than arriving at your destination, all set for a dream vacation -- only to discover that your luggage decided not to make the trip with you.

Some of our TopTrips fans know this feeling all too well. If you do, too, read their stories and commiserate by leaving a comment below!

"I had travelled internationally, passing through three countries and my luggage was not lost until the connecting flight between NYC and Indianapolis. From Cleveland, instead of my luggage going onto Indy with me, it went to upstate Michigan."

"When we flew to Alaska, I stayed and Larry came home with frozen Halibut in his suitcase. His luggage got lost in Chicago and when it finally arrived in Greenville they asked what it looked like -- he simply said, "Oh, you'll know which one it is." It was still frozen!"

"On our first cruise our luggage got onto the wrong connecting flight and we almost didn't get it before sailing. The cruise ship was great and took care of dealing with American Airlines and we got it just about an hour before we set sail."

"I spent 10 days out of a two-week trip with no luggage. I was 13 and went to Dominican Republic where I had to wear my cousin's clothes -- except that, at 13, I was 5'7" and 80 lbs and my cousin was 5'4" and about 120 lbs. Not a good look - even at 13."

"On a trip to Cabo we arrived my luggage did not --- it took two and half days to get it back but the worst part was that the airline and resort staff kept telling me to check back in two hours - for over two days! Finally went to Walmart and purchased swimsuit, shorts, tops - I had been in a velour sweat suit the entire time...."

"On a trip to France, my luggage was lost for two weeks. By the fourth day I made a big fuss about it and the airline gave me an American Express gift card for $2,000 so that I could buy clothes until my luggage showed up. Fortunately, my luggage was lost and I had only spent $400 -- I used the remainder of the money to go to Italy and Spain."

"It happened in Aruba, we went 24 hours without anything to wear -we couldn't even go swimming unless we found a nude beach! That taught us to carry at least a swimsuit in our bag!"

"My luggage was lost in Zurich, Switzerland, and it was no fun! The happy part came after the misery, Swiss Air did reimburse me for new luggage and a clothes allowance then my luggage arrived at my door nine weeks later! However, I got an email saying I had to pre-pay CH140 to get it. Luckily, I had purchased trip insurance. So in the end, I had new clothes, my old clothes and my faithful suitcase encased in plastic."

"My daughter and I arrived in Dublin with no clothes but the ones we had on. We were both wearing white shirts and had Thai for dinner where both got curry on our shirts and had to wear them for two days, which is how long it took the airline to get our luggage to us. Two entire days, plus the night we arrived. It could have been worse, for sure, but it still sucked!"

"It happened to me when I went on a weekend trip to New Jersey for work -- they lost my luggage for three weeks! It was close to Christmas and I had new items in my suitcase with tags. It turned out the luggage had been sent to JFK airport, not where I was going, and left there. Of course, many things were missing including any new tagged items that I had."

"My mother had a bad experience once. She picked up luggage that looked exactly like hers and it wasn't - all she had instead was baby clothes!"

"My husband and I took an Eastern Caribbean cruise which sailed out of Florida. When our plane landed in Florida, there was no luggage. We had to stand in line and file a claim and get on the ship with no clothes (except luckily I had a bathing suit in my carry on). We bought a few things at the shop on ship at outrageous prices to get us by the first two days of our cruise. Also we couldn't eat in the dining room because no dress clothes! Luckily, on formal night they let us borrow some clothes to go to dinner. Luckily trip insurance reimbursed us for about half of what we spent on the clothes from the ship."

"US AIR lost my family' luggage on our trip to Atlantis in the Bahamas. It took two days and it was at Easter time so no stores were open, only the ones in Atlantis so we had to shop there and it was very expensive. But the airline sent us a check for everything we had to purchase!"
