Out of Curiosity

Probably the funniest question I've ever gotten from a visitor to DC came from a British friend who earnestly asked, while riding up the elevator of the Washington Monument, who the structure was built for. Looking back, I feel bad that we all laughed hysterically at him -- especially after reading this article from Consumer Traveler and realizing that we Americans can also be a little dense when it comes to international history!
